Position Description:
Works with minimal supervision in a team environment. Performs system
administration and systems engineering tasks including system design,
development, testing, implementation, and regular system maintenance.
Serves as technical team lead and/or project manager as assigned.
Remains up to date and knowledgeable about systems administration
standards and best practices.    

Essential Functions  
*Serves as subject matter expert for operating system administration
tasks including system design, development, testing, implementation and
regular system maintenance. 
*Shares technical knowledge with peers and trains them on systems
related processes. 
*Provides technical leadership for the university. 
*Ensures confidentiality, integrity and availability of information
assets through system security management processes. 
*Implements a defined strategy and plan for server infrastructure and
ensures that changes are controlled in line with the organization's
change management procedure. 
*Designs and implements procedures for backup, restoration and
monitoring of systems, applications, data and documentation. 
*Develops and maintains documentation and procedures for system
administration activities. 
*Solves system-related end-user problems/requests in an escalated
support environment. 
*Performs other related duties as assigned.    

Education/Experience  
Bachelor's degree with specialized training in the field of information
technology required, plus a minimum of five years experience in the IT
field with at least three years experience performing systems
administration duties. An equivalent combination of education and
experience may be accepted. 
   
Knowledge/Skills/Ability  
*Linux Server system management skills required. 
*Knowledge of cfengine and open source software preferred. 
*Ability to manage and administer the above systems with minimal
supervision and with strong attention to security and to operational
detail. 
*Operational knowledge of Oracle and MS SQL is preferred. 
*Knowledge of fundamental networking concepts, including TCP/IP, DNS,
DHCP, ICMP, and WINS required. 
*Knowledge of common Internet application protocols, including SMTP,
SNMP, HTTP, SSL, NFS and TCP required. 
*Knowledge of enterprise storage platforms such as SAN or NAS preferred.

*Familiarity with scripting languages such as Shell, Batch, Perl or
Python required. 
*Effective oral and written communication skills 
*Must have effective project management and technical team management
skills. 
*Knowledge of superior customer service standards and practices. 
*Availability to work after hours and/or weekends and on-call, as
specified by supervisor.    

Physical Requirements  
Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or a
negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry,
push, pull or otherwise move objects. This includes occasional hardware
installation or maintenance. May also require rerouting, adding or
removing network cables behind furniture or under raised flooring.
Talking, hearing, fingering, grasping, repetitive motions. Close visual
acuity. May be required to function in narrow aisles or passageways. Not
substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
