If the mechanical innards of the tape deck are anything like the vintage
cameras I like to use, oil that was used previously will attract dust
like a magnet and clog up the inner workings. Disassembly, cleaning with
a good solvent, perhaps some scraping with dental picks, and reassembly
will likely be needed. If any lubrication is used at all, perhaps a
modern dry lubricant would be better than an oil based lubricant (don't
take my word for this; I'm speculating).
