Ubuntu has a special kernel for 32bit system with more than 4GB ram,
it's called linux-image-2.6.31-14-generic-pae
  http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/linux-image-2.6.31-14-generic-pae

Debian has a similar package called something like linux-image-2.6-bigmem
