Government run ISPs? Why, that's SOCIALISM!

Seriously, though, Wilson's a much smaller town, and they floated a
bond to build out the infrastructure required to reach the houses.
The money is (and probably always will be) mostly in the last mile.

Granted, it only cost them two years' worth of the TWC CEO's
(reported) salary. So maybe there's hope after all.

Instead of building out an infrastructure, though, why couldn't
someone do a co-op (small 's' socialism!) ISP running on the already
installed TWC infrastructure? I mean, Earthlink gets to do it, so
you'd think there'd be room for other players. I hear, though, that
there's some pretty nasty stuff TWC does behind the scenes to make it
hard for third parties.

To fully extrapolate this tangent back to something more relevant, do
the Wilson folks use linux anywhere in their system? Maybe it's time
to see if that guy in Wilson wants to come give a talk about setting
something like this up?
