I'm running Xubuntu on an old 366MHz laptop with 256MB RAM, it works but it is 
slow...

The two distros that people in my local LUG seem to use on low spec machines are 
CrunchBang and Puppy, both of which seem to be actively maintained and do a 
reasonable job.
