More specifically, you could...
1) Set up a Nagios install and have it monitor a non-production
service that only you have access to and control over. For example,
install Apache on your desktop and have it monitor a page served from

down without scheduling maintenance, schedule maintenance, etc.
3) Having done this over a period of a few minutes or hours, calculate
manually what the uptime should be, and have Nagios give you a report.
Compare the two.
4) Tell us what you found.
