There was an Ask Slashdot about this a couple of years ago that I 
thought had some good discussion.  Let me test my google fu ... yes:

Some of the comments may be pertinent to your decision, but I think it 
boils down to three things:

1. How much time are you willing to invest in this?

2. Linux is hardy so you only need to make sure that the there is
    driver support for all the pieces and parts before you buy the
    machine.  Much more so than Windows, Linux will Just Work if it
    has a driver.

3. How much cash are you willing to spend?

Don't forget that unless you have a personal investment in this, time 
/is/ money; you'll be hard pressed -- living in USA and posting on this 
mailing list -- to make a case that much more than 10 minutes is worth 
the ~$10 you might save.
