Didn't the GS have on the fly compression?  I know that when we had our
setup with regular G and then GL we would clock the CPU down to 133 Mhz (I
think... this was 4 years ago) and we were still able to push 70-80 through
our internal network.  We also had OpenWRT on the routers and they were
acting as accesspoints/bridges -- no routing tables.
