[TriLUG] Portable Linux (Bootable USB Flash Drive) Creation?

I built a 'preload' iso, burned it, and then used the utility to transfer it to my flash drive. It works! But, it's incredibly slow. I'll keep playing, but this is certainly an option. I only had 2 requirements

1) It had OpenOffice/LibreOffice installed
2) It had a small FAT/NTFS partition that I could save data to that would be readable from any computer.

This fits the bill, although I should have made a 3) at least moderate performance. I did see that DSL has a USB bootable system, but I don't like the desktop environment that DSL uses. I guess you can't have everything. :)

Yet another (and darn cool) source for making these is www.susestudio.com
When at IBM, I used this site to make boot-able tools for testing SLES-based

servers. If you haven't seen the site, it's worth a look just for geek
factor alone.
You can build your custom ISO, and "test drive" it in your browser from one
of
their servers.
