It should be noted that PCIe is a point-to-point "bus".  Hopefully the
motherboard designed connected the PCIe slots to the bridge in a
sequential order, and the silkscreen numbers beside each slot (one
based) correspond to the bridge port (zero based).

An 8x PCIe card will negotiate with the bridge to use all 8 lanes, but
the bridge may force it to use less.  I think this happens without OS
interaction.

Does "sudo dmidecode | less" give you anything interesting for PCI
Express ports ?
