I had a similar problem last week, where I could write files,
but I could not RENAME them. I wonder if this is a symptom
of the same problem.

In my case, I have samba and Virtualbox on my laptop, and I
run Windows XP and iTunes in a Virtualbox. All of my files
(mainly the iTunes library) are on the host, mounted as the
I drive. ITunes would start OK, and it would start to sync,
but then it would die in the middle with some unspecified
error. I finally tracked it down to not being able to
rename files or directories in the I: share.

Can you hop on the router and try to create, write and then
rename a file? That's the easiest test to see if it's the
same problem I had.

For me, the solution was to change "security = share" to
"security = user".
