Thanks for the link. I uninstalled mysql and reinstalled it (after
deleting my old directory structure). Now I have to see if I can get the
old database contents back in.

Yeah, opensuse had disabled the documented behavior of the -p<password>
option so that you had to type in the password interactively rather than
having it included on the command line. Sigh.
