from googling, it appears that ntfs keeps its own copy of 
the bad sectors in the MFT. If you copy your files to a 
clean disk, the record of the bad sectors on the old disk is 
copied to the new disk. chkdsk only adds new bad sectors to 
this list, it doesn't sync the list to the disk.
