This is brilliant! I'm in the midst of a long-term DIY home automation
design project, and I've been dreaming up ways to automatically detect my
arrival. I hadn't thought about using my smartphone's WiFi behavior as a
trigger. I think I just might steal this idea!
I knew I joined this list for a reason... :-)

Absolutely. Looks like there is a bit of a run on them, but I plan on
getting one (or several) as soon as I can. Possible applications I'm
- Cheap and fast NAS/print server/media server.
- Home theater media player using MythTV or Hulu Desktop, paired with a
- Vehicle tracking. There is something cool about having one of these on
my car. Then I can map my commute, monitor gas mileage, etc.
- Makeshift/DIY security system: hook this thing up to a few cheap
webcams and set up motion detection.
- Home automation/better thermostat. I currently have a cheap one with a
single sensor. Needless to say this results in one room of the house at
temperature I want, and the rest either too hot or too cold. A small
that can hook up to a large number of sensors would be ideal.
- Home automation again: whenever my phone joins the WiFi network,
Raspberry Pi could turn on the outside lights, start the coffee pot,
my NAS, etc.
I doubt I'll get to do some of these things, but all of them seem pretty
cool to try. Anyone else got any cool uses they have in mind?
