That'd be another quick addition:

HOP=`traceroute 8.8.8.8 -N 1 -n -m 1 2>&1 | sed 1d | cut -d ' ' -f 4`

But, to be honest, it sounds like a faulty modem.  You can try manually
resetting it.  There's also usually an admin interface that can show signal
to noise ratio.

If they upgraded their service to something with higher bandwidth, they
might be using multiple streams.  If that's the case and they're using an
ambit modem, it'll complain and refuse to do anything if it can't lock the
streams.
