seems an obvious thing to do and I've wondered about it 
myself. Anything that drops the temperature in the condenser 
would help, both in terms of backpressure on the compressor, 
and for getting rid of heat.

Thomas suggests a mister. Thomas is concerned (probably 
reasonably) about corrosion and boiler scale on the coils. I 
grew up in Australia, where you aren't allowed to use water 
this way (water being a scarce resource, but then domestic 
water usage is a drop in the bucket compared to industry and 
agriculture). You're allowed to do anything with water you 
collect in a tank from your roof.
