The increased life comes about because the head/valves stay
at much the same temperature under different load and hence
the clearances remain the same. The parts aren't tight
fitting under once load regime and rattling under another.
Wear is minimized and lubrication simpler.

This doesn't directly apply in the A/C case. What does apply
is that applications that have historically been air cooled
for simplicity of construction, have bitten the bullet of
complexity and are water cooled now for increased
life/reliability.
