For me, GNU/Linux is about freedom. I can inspect my software to see
how it is doing something. If I want to change the behavior of
something, I only need to drop a patch file in the right place a
rebuild the relevant package. If I want to share software with my
friends, it is easy. There is little incentive for the creation of
anti-features since the distributor/user can just remove them.

I have had the displeasure of working with non-free software recently
for work and the free software experience is vastly better. I encourage
you to look at the philosophy section of http://www.gnu.org for more.

I should note that GNU/Linux is not the only free software operating
system.
