the sts16 uses rj45 ports for their serial connections. perle recommends the use
of a standard ethernet cable coupled with their rj45-db25 adapter connected to the
modem. this is what we are using. the modem is then connected to the phone line.

the computer uses a usb-to-serial adapter to connect to the 2nd modem, which is
also connected to a phone line.

placing a null-modem adapter between the perle adapter and its modem causes the
modem's lights to blink erratically, and it fails to answer calls.

where are you recommending that i place the null modem adapter/cable? or am i
misunderstanding your message?
