Sounds like your root password is not bguser. The fastest way to recover is
to reboot into single user mode, where it will drop you into the root
shell. Then you can change the root password directly.

Another possibility is that you actually have sudo installed. Try the
following: log in as "brian", then run the following:

$ sudo ls

If sudo is installed it will ask you for YOUR password (e.g.: the password
for the user "brian"). If that works and you get a list of files in your
home directory, then the way you access the root user is through sudo. This
would be unusual for a regular Debian install, but worth checking.

Also, as long as you have a CD burner or a USB flash drive, you don't need
to buy copies of other distros. In fact you could try them out before
installing them by making a bootable CD or USB drive. That way Ubuntu is
only a download away.
