What I would suggest is to download some "Live ISOs," such as the
current Ubuntu, Mint, and perhaps Fedora, although, of course, that is
not a Debian-based one, and try running them in either or both of your
laptops.

If you find a Live CD that works for you, you can either continue with
that environment for everything that you do with that machine, or, as
Alan suggests, use a Virtual Machine ( in particular VirtualBox ) to run
the "plain Jane" Debian that you want for your Raspberry work.

Of course, once you are happy with the Live CD, you would go ahead and
do the install "for real."

I like the current Mint, but Ubuntu is very popular, and might suit you
better.  Both are based on Debian, but have had work done on the "user
experience," and have added packages.
