[TriLUG] Database Software

Brian,

Having looked a little closer at Lotus Approach, I will retract the sqlite/sqliteman suggestion. Consider the mysql/libre office base solution. There will still be a learning curve, and I doubt it will be as seamless as Lotus approach. The question you may need to ask: What are the users doing with the database and can it be done differently?

I am a HUGE linux fan, but I think we all need to realize that Windows is VERY good at User interface software. This is still the main reason it is hard to move completely Linux. Having said that the productivity could be better on Linux if you can get people to rethink how they are doing things. But, be ready for major headaches.

Good Luck!

Subject: [TriLUG] Database Software

I am slowly trying to get a client to consider Linux.  But there is one major stumbling block -- a database program
that is as easy to use as Lotus Approach.  Because it must be networked Wine doesn't seem to be an option.

Yes, I know Approach is XBase.
Yes, I know no one uses XBase anymore.
No, they don't need a sophisticated SQL application.

The user interface, is so-o-o-o easy with Approach, and I have written a lot of LotusScript for this application;
which they have been using for nearly10 years.

Everything I've looked at is just too darn complicated (reminds me of Access!)  Is there anything that isn't going to
require months of learning on my part and the clients?
