It also has the Microsoft pptp VPN, which works great. I used to use it alot, even from my Android Tablet when at a hotspot, so I could keep my browsing private.

I use dd-wrt on a router at home and overall, I'm pretty happy with it. 
It has quite a few features that make it as capable as a full featured
security appliance.

Looking at the website, it looks like there is an VPN build that contains
openVPN.  I used openVPN several years ago but ran into the problem of
getting access past the gateway PC.  I suspect that I was missing some
form of NAT rule as well as possible push of configuration for updating
the DNS servers (for the LAN domain), etc.
