James,
         Just for the sake of trying, when you take your tech test, go ahead 
and take your general test too. Around here the charges are for "testing", 
so it will cost the same for one test or all three. So you should be able to 
take both the same day. Who knows, you nay get to be a general at your first 
testing session. It's worth a try.
