It's a shame there was never any good distro packaging of freenx, such 
that I could just say "(apt-get|yum|whatever} install freenx" and have 
something working.

Of course this may all be moot in a couple more years once things like 
Wayland and/or Mir create a newer streamlined protocol that eliminate 
most of the constraints Aaron mentioned re: ancient assumptions.
