I now drive anywhere less than 600 miles, and last year I drove 1200
miles from Orlando to Chicago for a gig. Part of it was because I had
family and other business in Chicago, but part of it was I didn't have
to worry about getting stranded or missing my plane or renting a
scratched up car and having them telling me I put on the scratches.

And you're right about pre-9/11/2001: In 1998 I flew with my wife and
six year old triplets from LA to Orlando, and it was easy, and we could
get up and walk around any time we wanted. Back in the 1970's, after the
plane reached top height, you could switch to one of the many empty
seats. One time in the 1970's, on a red-eye, these two middle aged
ladies shared their flask of whiskey with me.
