+1 on the HDHomeRun as well. SiliconDust provides excellent support,
with firmware updates for older products. They even replaced failing
powerpacks for free, even when they were out of warranty.

I have an older dual tuner HDHomerun ($54 from Amazon). I use it with
MythTV, but you can use the hdhomerun_config_gui to tune channels and
play streams with VLC. The API is simple and open, and you can easily
create shell scripts to tune and record the streams to disk. The video
stream is mpeg2 over udp, so as Kevin said, you can just write it to
disk without using CPU cycles for encoding.
