I agree on so much of this. And I do hope they figure something out.
Because as it stands for the times when linux won't support some third
party hardware that apple or ms do, I am starting to turn to apple
instead of ms.

The Linux revolution affected everyone to move toward low cost Unix based systems and this falls right into my prediction that Microsoft will continue to shrink as an OS as long as they continue to isolate their OS. They are the only mainstream OS that is not using some form of Unix based OS. The Ford quote says it all. Apple and Google integration and internet standards. That is a death blow statement for Microsoft.

Instead they have tried and failed to drive the standard requirements to their advantage and this is working against them. Best example I can give is Microsoft has refused to even create the most basic console standard, a native SSH application. Windows 2012 does not have it either. Every new server version I look for it and every time I am disappointed. Add in complicated licensing and cost and you have a losing combination. People are running from Microsoft in droves. They have lost the server battle to Linux and Apple is strongly cutting into their PC market. If not for XBox, they would be in serious trouble right now. Windows Phone should be Windows flop. They get credit for gaming, but can that seriously sustain them?

I am just making objective observations to drive my predictions. Microsoft is more vulnerable than anytime I have ever seen. The winds of change are in the air. New CEO and Bill Gates becoming an active member again. The decisions in the next year or two will be interesting.

I cannot see any other option in their long term health, but I am not the CEO either `,~) I think they should take the Apple route of ditching their crappy OS for a Unix variant, even if they keep it proprietary like Apple did. There is no way that they can keep up their development cost when the rest of the world is developing an OS at a neck-break pace. They should concentrate on what they do best and that is end user applications. They are a premium supplier of productivity applications. I think if they concentrated on the applications, they could even get back into serious server applications, which they are now left out because of their crappy OS. Their two pieces of gold are .NET and User Domain control for desktop maintenance and a UNIX variant would not have to change either of them. Who better to port those than MS. The difference would be that they will pick up more market

I think they are still one the best if not the best in Productivity and Development tools and would blow away everyone if they concentrated on this instead of their crappy OS.
