I am kind of the same and like to use vim.  Somewhat just for practice
to make sure it stays fresh as in some cases it could be one of few
options.

I will mention Notepad++ which works on pretty much every platform and
is syntax sensitive for many languages, PHP I am sure being one.  Also
Notepad ++ supports the use of regex for search and replace.  So that
would be the next tier up suggestions short of going the full IDE route.

As for the IDE route.  I believe there is a PHP extension/add-on for
Eclipse.
