[TriLUG] Upgrading an older Red Hat

When an older machine's CD/DVD won't work under Linux, try the kernel parm:

libata.force=5.00:udma16

Depending on how your CD/DVD is attached, 5.00 may target the wrong drive.   The 'dmesg' log shows that the kernel/libata is trying to set a higher transfer rate than the drive is capable of (do a web search to find the specs on your make/model of CD/DVD drive), and the symptoms are that a bootable CD will boot fine at first with the BIOS but will not mount reliably.
