Since you mentioned Toyota, i have a scion that i bought for 16k new.  I have 155k miles on it and put avout 1k into repairs in 6 years (mostly timing belt and water pump).  It gets about 33mpg and I aaccellerate agressively.  I hope to get another 150k out of it.
