I don't have any very helpful technical tips for you, but I can tell you
that editing for print is what is typically done "in the industry". Both
computer monitors and printers have biases, so it's typical to do a
whole lot of cross-calibration to make sure that what you see on your
screen will be similar to what you will print. This requires adjusting
for the computer monitor and the printer, and it's complicated.

It does sound like something crazy might be going on in your situation
that makes it more dramatic than it might otherwise be.
