[TriLUG] Slightly Off Topic - personal NAS or Cloud Service?

Recently had a hard drive failure and found out the cloud service I was using (Just Cloud) was not automatically backing up my video files. They want to charge me an extra fee to backup my video files.

Am now re-thinking using a cloud service and considering a NAS solution. I'm looking at Synology DiskStation 2-Bay DS214<http://smile.amazon.com/Synology-DiskStation-Diskless-Attached-DS214/dp/B00FY6DV3S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1422660269&sr=8-1&keywords=synology+nas+ds214> for $293.99 or the Buffalo LinkStation 421e LS421DE<http://smile.amazon.com/Buffalo-LinkStation-Enclosure-Performance-LS421DE/dp/B00CO0DE0W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1422724383&sr=8-1&keywords=buffalo+linkstation+421> for $129.99. The NAS would be shared between a linux, Windows (win7), and Mac workstation.

I've read really good reviews for both. Synology seems to be the higher level and better software that comes with it. I'm leaning towards the Synology one I think because of the software.

There are quite a lot of bad reviews on Amazon for the Buffalo - more than the Synology. So I think I'm leaning towards the Synology one because of that and the software.
Reaching out to TriLug folks for recommendations on what others utilize for home workstation backup. Do you use a cloud service or personal NAS? Any thoughts about the two I'm considering?

Key goals are:


1)      Backup Video files!!!!

2)      Multi-client us (windows, linux, and mac compatible)

3)      Remote connectivity - being able to access the home based NAS while away at the office or on vacation

Appreciate any input on a recommendation.
