I've got live persistent (remembers wifi settings and keeps hello_world.py

this.

The student has a desktop machine (as well as the laptop) with a 22" 1080p
monitor (I don't, I can't afford one) which comes up 800x600. Presumably a video
card driver is needed.

this looked really slick. It's supposed to work for just about every distro.
However it locked up after downloading the ubuntu iso. It was telling me it was
writing, without the usb key light flashing, for about 5 mins. I killed it.

By then Alan has given me instructions on how to make a live usb stick from the
ubuntu CD. I had looked for documentation on how to do this a few weeks ago,
when setting up the python class, and didn't find the instructions Alan gave me,
anywhere, so I had abandonned the idea of a live usb stick.

How you do it: from the CD, boot to live ubuntu. Then search for "USB create"
and follow the GUI, which will make a live persistent usb drive for you.

The ubuntu method of writing to a flash key failed over and over saying there
was no free space on the flash key. (Well why not? just format it!) I eventually
rebooted ubuntu, when it started working perfectly. This error, in writing to
the flash key, is all over the internet. Apparently people are having trouble
with it everywhere. There are no sensible solutions for it.

I can even write and run a hello_world.py with it, in an xterm and using vi.
What else could you ask for? Have flash key, will travel.

I still have to figure out the fascinating problem of booting an external disk
with grub 0.97. Maybe tomorrow.

Thanks for your help everyone. The student will have linux on a flashkey,
without having to mess with his warantee.

Joe
