I set up from scratch Pilot in 2009.  Before that, it was
running CentOS.

The reason I chose Ubuntu LTS in 2009 was that this is a
community-managed machine, and so it would make sense to
choose a distro with a very wide acceptance and good
chance of being familiar to whoever would be maintaining
it down the road.

The reason I did not stick with CentOS is because I was
the only one available to install it that weekend, and I
was more familiar with deb-based systems than rpm-based
ones.

This same reasoning might influence other choices as well:
hardware vs software RAID, LVM, etc.  For a group-managed
machine, we need either SIMPLICITY or GOOD DOCUMENTATION.
Or both.
