[TriLUG] Linux from scratch project?

Pick what interests you. From embedded distributions as Alan is alluding
to, to Lee Fick's wise suggestion of just using LFS as a research project,
to Steve's suggestion of playing around in a chroot... all of these are
excellent ways to learn more about the base system. Or, if you really
must, tinker with Gentoo (but please do avoid the path Igor describes...
your time, and that of your CPU, has value :) ).

What really matters is that you find it interesting enough to actually
puzzle through the inevitable problems you will encounter. Following the
LFS recipe will not make you a Unix Wizard, or cause you to grow an
impressive grey beard. Struggling through why that machine still won't
boot when you stepped off the beaten path just a step or two, and learning
how all the nearby knobs work, why they're set the way they are, and what
happens when you turn a particular one to 11... that's what puts hair on
your metaphorical chin, so to speak.
