While this book didn't inspire me, It's opening paragraph is burned into my
brain.

"This story begins and ends the same way. The last man on earth sat alone
in the room.
There came a KNOCK at the door." --- "Knock" by Fredric Brown.

"Nineteen-Eighty-Four" by George Orwell ( Could be re-named -- The world as
we know it )
"The World set Free" by H.G. Wells ( Stories can stimulate bigger minds -
The Atomic Bomb )
"Around the World in 80 days" By Jules Verne ( more than one way to
accomplish the same end )
"The Code Book" By Simon Singh ( Codes were made to be broken )

While K&R's "C programming language" is the Classic work on C, I was
inspired to learn C by way of " Power C -- The high-Performance C Compiler"
>From Mix Software.

I still have most of these books in my Library.

I should give a plug for books that I have read and keep reading through
the years.
The Holy Bible ( beginning around 1948 )
Radio Amateur's Handbook ( beginning with the 1955 edition )
