Position Description:
The primary focus for this role will be the management of virtualized and 
physical Linux workstations and servers. The successful candidate will have 
the desire and ability to quickly learn new technologies to solve business 
challenges. By working closely with team members, this person will deliver 
IT services that provide clients value, align with industry best practices 
and follow UNC-CH IT guidelines and requirements. This position resides 
jointly in the Department of Computer Science (CS) and the Office of Arts & 
Sciences Information Services (OASIS). For reporting purposes this position 
will be managed by the CS IT Manager.

Work includes optimizing systems performance, documenting system 
architecture and processes, troubleshooting systems problems, and analyzing 
usage and systems load issues of a highly technical nature. Work will 
include close interaction with customers, technicians, analysts, and 
specialists to troubleshoot problems related to the use of single and/or 
multiple information systems. Work may include creation, installation, and 
modification of software and hardware, testing, and documentation on a 
variety of platforms. May have final technical decision responsibility. 
This position will also participate in outreach programs for OASIS and 
Computer Science and will be required to lead, teach, and train a variety 
of groups and individuals on a wide range of technical issues, such as but 
not limited to information security, use of software, and systems 
administration. Most work will occur during normal business hours, but some 
weekend and night work will be required.

Overall priorities are set in discussion with supervisor and colleagues, 
but considerable independence is expected in the completion of assigned 
tasks, and initiative is expected in determining areas for critical 
progress. This position requires both the ability to work independently on 
tasks as well as collaboratively in a team setting, to prioritize work, and 
monitor progress against defined parameters. Other requirements are strong 
analytical and problem solving skills and strong communication, customer 
service and organizational skills and the ability to shift between tasks 
rapidly and respond to escalated and emergency issues.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, 
Computer Engineering, or closely related degree from an appropriately 
accredited institution; and one year of experience in operations analysis 
and design systems programming or closely related area; or
- Associate’s degree in Computer Information Technology, Computer 
Engineering Technology or Networking Technology from an appropriately 
accredited institution and two years of experience in operations analysis 
and design, systems programming or closely related area; or an equivalent 
combination of education and experience.
- Journey level requires an additional one year of education or experience.
- Advanced level requires an additional two years of education or 
experience.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
This position requires both the ability to work independently on tasks as 
well as collaboratively in a team setting, to prioritize work, and monitor 
progress against defined parameters. Other requirements are strong 
analytical and problem solving skills and strong communication, customer 
service and organizational skills and the ability to shift between tasks 
rapidly and respond to escalated and emergency issues.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in one-on-one or group training is preferred.
