I have a wndr3700 ( n600)  and thinking of upgrading
 to an AC wifi router.  I am not happy with the range.  I idiot buy a netgear extender and I am experimenting with placement.  The range on 5gig is very poor for most routers, but expecially poor on this one.  I am currently looking at the tplink archer models.  Either that or running eth cables.
If range is an issue, do the research and find one you will be happy with.  I haven't upgraded yet , but I am disappointed with netgear wndr3700 wifi router plus wn2500rp extender.

What problem are you having, if any? I used a WRT-54G for years with no problems. I ran Ethernet cable to the other end of the house and hooked it up there, giving me a stronger signal, boosting throughput what. In my experience, external factors are more influential on speed, e.g., quality of feed to the house, slow servers, etc.

A dual band router might give you s marginal increase in speed.

That said, the WRT54G doesn't have up-to-date security. 

Linksys: read reviews at Newegg.com before taking the plunge. I went two rounds of returns before giving up and going with a NETGEAR Wireless Router - N600 Dual Band Gigabit (WNDR3700). Added advantages - Ethernet and USB ports. It's doing a good job for me. It is connected to the router via an Ethernet cable that I snaked through unfinished space in the basement and up through the wall behind a piano.

Tip: don't do the "automated" installation. Read the full manual.
