couple of talking points.

1. Much easier to implement a IVR, so they can say Dial X for youth programs
2. My guess is that they have part time people. Youth and or Music ministers, really nice to forward phones to their cell and or forward voicemail to their email.
3. Depending on how sophisticated you want to get you could pretty easily implement a auto-dialer to say dial the conversation or a prayer chain with a a message. Say church is canceled due to inclement weather.
4.At my church we implement the “ex-girlfriend” feature of Asterisk/FreePBX for our Pastor. For those os you unfamiliar, it’s basically a white/black list depending on how you implement it. In our case certain people who dial his extension, get to ring his phone (Thing family and specific others based on caller ID) everyone else goes back to the secretary or voicemail depending on how you implement it.
5. Selective forwarding to cell/home if no answer at the extension.
6. Soft phone or handset could be in part time person’s home.

I’m not saying traditional PBX’s don’t have these features. but if you have someone willing to support the FOSS phone system, its significantly cheaper for the phone features above.

They need to realize the features that FOSS VOIP brings to the table. Congregation can benefit from technology with minimal impact to the church.
