Hmmm. I guess I'm in that boat.

Sounds like yet another reason for me to get back my ham ticket after its  
50-year lapse, to get some sort of good rig, and to make sure that I have  
a roughly sinusoidal emergency power generator. Then I'll have good  
emergency communication. I can even send CW at about 13 WPM but can't  
receive any better than the 5 WPM of my novice days. (Envious thoughts of  
the QRQ guys who can read 75 WPM as if it were human speech.) Oh wait,  
nobody uses CW for anything now except bragging rights.

It appears that fiber will be coming up to the far corner of my 100-acre  
farm but not to my driveway. So I'll probably be another ten or twenty  
years before I get anything better than DSL. Twenty years ago it was 9600  
dial-up, so twenty years for another major improvement sounds about right.
