I've just done a control. Earlier this week I replaced 10 year old batteries in
one big UPS with Batteries Plus batteries. Just now I replaced the 10 year old
batteries in an identical UPS with Amazon batteries recommended by Shay.

I didn't look at the open circuit voltage on any of the batteries or the date
stamps. I did notice that the bubble wrap on all the Amazon batteries had "12-9"
in marker pen. I assume they were wrapped on 9 Dec and have not been charged
since. (I think 4 months is a long time to leave a lead acid battery.)

Batteries Plus batteries: came up with 2 bars of 5 on the UPSs voltage meter and
took about half a day to get to 5 bars. This was not good. I expect new
batteries to be fully charged.

Amazon Batteries: came up with 4 bars of 5. The 4 bars is likely the difference
between the open circuit voltage of a charged battery (12.6V) and the float
voltage when on charge (13.8V). I'm impressed that the batteries have kept their
charge (4 bars) for 4 months.

I assume the Batteries Plus batteries had little charge on them and have been
sulphating up while they sit on a shelf waiting to be sold. It's hard to imagine
stock sits around in the store very long as when I'm in there, the staff are
always filling the shelves. Maybe the batteries sit in some warehouse somewhere
for long time before they're delivered to the retail stores.

Maybe the problem is Batteries Plus batteries.

Joe
