Many thanks, all. I will prolly not be able to sway the old-school DBA & his superior, but the other suggestions come up with here have been helpful. The wining suggestion, in case any of you ever need it is:

<DIR>

Honestly, there's no easy way to do this that I can think of. UFS is a structured filesystem with i-nodes storing data, whereas "raw" partitions are just that, unformatted data space. Raw filesystems are managed by the database itself, instead of the OS. To do the conversion:

<DIR>

Make a 500MB Veritas Volume and make sure to not put a filesystem on it.

2. Have the DBA initiallize the raw space in Oracle.

3. Have the DBA move data over to the new raw area.

4. Remove freed up .dbf files from UFS filesystems.

5. Remove any unused UFS filesystems

6. repeat with step #1 until done.
</DIR></DIR>

One at a time. Make another pot of coffee, Bob. I'm gonna need it. Many thanks to everyone who replied.
