W2K: why is harddisk accessed during dvd playing

I'm playing movie dvds (,VOB files I think) with Matrox Cine
Player on both a desktop and a laptop on W2K. I expected the
dvd access light to be on most of the time and the hard disk
not to be accessed at all. Instead the harddisk and dvd
alternate, with the harddisk working really hard (from the
noise it's making). I expect this will slow down dvd
playing, if not shortening the life of the harddisk.

The desktop machine has 768MBytes of memory. I would have
hoped that was enough for any tmp space to play dvds.

The desktop machine did have a virus checker, which I
deinstalled, without any change. The laptop doesn't have a
virus checker.

Anyone know what's going on?

Thanks Joe
