[NCSA-discuss] editors in windows, Mac

I'm teaching intro computing (with python) to some high
school kids (after school). I'm letting them use whatever
platform they have (it's laptops with windows or Macs). I've
started with binary arithmetic and data types but shortly
they'll start writing code. I'm wondering what editors are
commonly in use on windows and Macs.

I can install IDLE (a python IDE available for all platforms
it seems) and cygwin on windows. Presumably people develope
code on windows without cygwin. If I were to write the
"hello world" program in python on windows without IDLE or
cygwin, what editor would I use? Is it notepad? I seem to
remember that notepad messes with the extension when you
save files.

What's the editor on Macs? I hope they have something better
than vi or emacs

Thanks Joe
