Macs include vi, emacs and a graphical editor called TextEdit (which is 
more wordpad-like than anything else). However, in our office, most of 
the Mac types use TextWrangler. It's free, easy to use (graphical) and 
reasonably powerful. http://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/

On Windows, I have heard good things about Notepad++. It's also free and 
reasonably powerful. (I'm not sure what the official site is offhand, 
but Google does a fairly good job finding it)
