10 years ago -- Retailers liked serial.  it was "better" "ya know"
better in that it was:
1. cheaper
2. the home run line lenghs were longer, so it was easier to cable
3. they often had techs that could debug serial

The fact is glitches from time to time didn't seem to bother anyone.
