Here is some conspiracy theory for you:
M$ offers to help LG optimize their drives by altering the drive
firmware thereby "inadvertently" creating a drive that will die in a
given scenario... such as when run under linux. M$ PR spins it that
"Linux kills CD Drives dead!"
