I worked on a system [1] that used capacitive touch screens from 3M
mounted to an LCD from NEC.  3M provided a serial controller board
and a driver (one object file and some source wrapper files to link
to your kernel, closed source and an NDA) that made the device look
just like a mouse under X.  From the application's perspective, it
worked just like a mouse.

I know that these touch screens and the NEC displays were not cheap,
but they seemed to work OK most of the time.  From time to time, we
had grounding issues.
