Internal or external will not make any difference.

If you shut down a non-journaled filesystem, you can
introduce inconsistencies.  In fact, an external drive
might be MORE susceptible to errors, I would think, just
because it is more loosely coupled with the OS.

I would see if you could run your AV system with a journal.
